My father in law's mother passed away years ago. While cleaning out her basement we found a box of elephant figurines.

The larger elephant is rather heavy, and seems to be hand carved wood.

The smaller elephant also appears to be hand sculpted wood. However, is significantly lighter (not because of the size difference)

We are trying to figure out what exactly we have?

The larger one is probably carved from teak wood. The smaller one is most likely balsa wood, judging from the grain.

      Thank you for the response.

Are these rare, common, or neither? How do you determine value?

The sales market determines the value. You would have to look on eBay, Etsy and places like that to see if there are any for sale and what the asking price is. I don't imagine there is a great demand for these, as they are viewed as tourist objects. Now that I take a second look at the larger elephant, it looks like cast resin and not wood, reference the smooth white patches. ( I was tired when I typed that first response, lol. )
