I just purchased this at thrift store today and I was hoping if anyone could give me info. About it. I especially would like to know what it was used for? The sring attached is it string of fate? Any ideas on stamp? Thanks to all!
The Chinese mark on the base reads top down and right to left: Great Qing, Qianlong, Period Make. The Qianlong reign in the Qing dynasty lasted from 1736 to 1795. This is a very popular mark on modern reproduction porcelain. This is the first time I have seen Chinese porcelain adorned in this manner. This type of macrame is often found in many variations on Japanese samurai weapons.
Apologies rucklczglass, you are perfectly correct and I should have remembered that. Some time ago I removed several such knots from carved Chinese pendants to be tested for jade. I still have one which was also attached to six amber beads.
