New Woodcut Movement: Set of 22 Chinese Woodcut prints from 1944
Our family inherited a set of 22 Chinese Woodcut prints from the 1940's which were given to our father during World War II. These woodcut prints are from The Selected Works of the Lu-I Woodcut by the Lu Sin Academy of Arts and Literature, Yenan China, 1944. These prints are from the New Woodcut Movement chronicling life in China during the 30's and 40's and used as a tool for exposing the social ills of China during that period.
Our father, Lt. Colonal George Hanlon was a pilot whose plane was shot down September 8, 1944 over Anshan, Manchuria. He and 6 members of the crew of the B-29, “ My Assam Dragon” spent four months in China hiding from the Japanese. After their rescue, my father was given the set of prints by the Chinese Communist leaders as a "souvenir”.
Nice item which has historical and art merits...really love it
I like traditional woodcuts and owns quite a number of original Chinese prints; but this is the first time I come across this. Is it possible to share more photos of this? by the way, are there 22 prints or 18 prints? I read worldcat, it says that it is a 18 print set. thanks!
