This is 28 L 18.5 D and 22 H Got this from a neighbor over the weekend. Seems to be in great shape in what I consider all original condition except one of the latches/hasp has been replaced. Can one of you trunk gurus can tell which one is correct- the right or left one? I think the left one is original. Would like to get a matched pair back on it. I seem to like the trunks with the canvas removed showing the wood however the material on this thing is in such good shape I probably should not remove it. The paper lining inside is also in great shape, even though it looks like exposed wood in the photos, I guess it bleeds through. The tag reads WC or WG Farel trunks Buffalo NY--- FARELS CHEAP TRUNK STORE-- http://hmsantiquetrunks.com/trunk-makers-pictures-d-i.html also has a Union made sticker on it. Hopefully this may help others identify if their similar trunk without the sticker. I see where this family made trunks, not sure when WCFAREL stopped and his sons took over. The front lock has a patent date of 1892- how many years would this style lock have been used? Trying to get a ball park figure of the date of this style trunk. I ordered what I think is a key for the lock last night. The Eagle lock has the number "28" stamped on it. I also need insight on what length replacement leather is needed for 8.5 inches total length- meaning you order and extra 1-2 inches to allow the handle to "bellow out" so a hand can get into it or do you simply order the type with the 1 inch slot that allows the handle to come out? Your trunk is basically original. The black and the canvas has been repainted. A little tip on identifying whether the black metal has been repainted is to look at the nails. Nails went on last, so they would be bare metal (actually tinned) not have black paint on them. It is WG Farel, and the left latch is the correct one. If it was the right one a nail hole would show above the left latch. I have one if you need it, just contact me. Your trunk is most likely from the late 1890's to early 1900's, and is of good quality. Many lock designs were used for 20 to 30 years, so hard to say how long yours was used. The number 28 is the key code, so if you get a genuine Eagle #28 key it should work. But not always. If it does not work oil it and jiggle it a bit until it does. Understand though the way these were made it could be broken internally and never work. If you call me I will help you get the correct handles. (408-691-4264) Hop[e this helps,

Thanks Jim for all the information. Yes it helped a lot! Can you give me some insight on what length leather handle to order for it? Do you normally order one an extra inch longer than the spacing or get the ones with the 1 inch slot in them? I have a friend with a shoe repair shop ( he has all kinds of thick leather) that I may have make me some.
oops- I guess I could take one of the originals out of it and measure or use as a pattern- Bonehead question of the day goes to me!
The problem with the handles are there are only a few out there, and they are all the same size for the most part. However, trunk makers did not make just one size, there were numerous sizes. The sliding handles have more room for error, so you should be OK. I would go with the handles at Brettuns Village. Because no two trunks are alike, I make all my own handles.
