The name in the second photo looks like "MERRELL", but apparently it's "MERLEEN". The "LM" could be the owner or the creator of the dagger.
My friend is looking into this further, so maybe she finds something. Now i have a completely different direction in regard to research.

That's an interesting lead, melaniej. I'm not sure if it's Merrill or Merrell - too hard to read. Wouldn't that be something if this paper knife did come from that company only to end up here in the Netherlands?
The L M initials are in old writing shape, the symbol looks to me as a witch with a hat riding her broom, lol! A diabolic piece among religious items !?!
Merrill attribution is convenient with their time frame, I'd say around 1880, historical revival (griffins, gargoyles were the rage then).
kyra - that is EXACTLY what I thought - a witch on a broom!! I also thought late 1800s when I saw it. I have to research the figures on the blades to see if I can find out their meanings.
