i got this info from an expert in Asian antiques in Singapore: It is a nice box and these were popular in late qing. On the top is carved relief lacquered and gilded but the execution is indifferent.
On the side is myojin or gold thread decoration which is variation on the coromandel type carved lacquer technique. In this technique after craving the design gold dust is pushed into the cracks. However this piece is either heavily restored (more likely since myojin is rarely done anymore and I do see some oxidation on the red lacquer on the top) or relatively new. A nice piece nevertheless.

he doesn't say 'nice piece' very often, from what i can tell, so i'm very pleased.

i also got this info: The decorative motif is termed ???? Wu Fu Peng Shou, a tradtional Chinese auspicious motif, popular since the Qing dynasty. Fu (Bat) is homophonic to good fortune in the Chinese language. Five bats imply five kinds of good fortune. The medallion in the middle stands for Shou, longevity.
