Hello! I found this pot in a second hand store buried under a collection of terracotta pots. It looks incredibly old and has a great patina. There is a collection of strange white substances that are all over the pot in different locations. It looks like the remnants of Barnacles. The pot itself is very light, deceptively so. The underside looks to have a newspaper stuck into the clay but it is not paper of any kind. It almost looks like ashes. Anyway I am completely lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Obviously a big problem with an ID online is that we can't see small details or feel the weight of an object. You may need to compare the weight of your pot against a clay pot of the same size and thickness to see if yours is much lighter. If it's considerably lighter, it's possible what you have is a composite of some kind. There are different types of fiber and clay compositions that create lightweight, durable pots that have a similar look to traditional clay pots.
I know that's not much help, ID-wise, but it's where I'd start if it was my piece.
Sorry, I guess that I forgot to mention that in the description. It is very, very light for its size and a pot of relative size. But when you look through a loop you can definitely see the clay. I am not sure if that helps or not. It definitely doesn't look like it was made even within the last 50 years. There is a definite substance on the clay. But something that took a really long time to form there.
