I found this edition of The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyon today: The Pilgrim's Progress, Most Carefully Collated With The Edition Containing The Author's Last Additions And Corrections. With Explanatory Notes By Thomas Scott, D. D., And A Life Of The Author By Josiah Conder, Esq. Embellished With Twenty-Five Engravings.
Bunyan, John, Introduction By Rev. Handley C. G. Moule, Lord Bishop of Durham
Editorial: Presbyterian Board Of Education / William S. Martien, Philadelphia, 1845

The Pilgrim's Progress is, after the Bible, considered by many to be one of the two or three most important books. It is a fantasy/allegory about the travels of Christian, who meets many characters, such as Mr. Worldly Wise and Pliable, along the way. It is said that in the days of westward expansion in the United States, early settlers often owned only two books: the Bible and John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress.

John Bunyon (1628-1688) (no relation to Paul Bunyon!), the son of a “Tinker” wrote this book in Jail. He was a non-conformist and was jailed for preaching the gospel without a license (aka outside of the Church of England).

This edition is supposedly the First American Quarto Edition and I was surprised to find it in Goodwill. Okay, so I paid a lot more than the usual $2 but I'm pretty happy with it. There is a good deal of foxing on the pages with the engravings but otherwise it is in fairly good shape and the covers look quite good. It is not that rare a book since it was so widely read and owned.
