I just love these bottles. I bought the at a auction back in 1990 for a pretty price but I think they are well worth it. When I bought them, I was told they were made from old Ivory but a friend of mine said she thinks they're carved from bone. Look at the back and tell me what you think.

A photo is not the best way to judge, and I can't find Schreger lines, but I believe these are definitely ivory. A photo of the bases might help (or not).
      My vote is for ivory.

Agree with Val, where you need to look is at the base, or preferably somewhere where the material can be seen raw and closeup. There are many sites online that can help you with what to look for.

Yep, ivory, I can see Schregers lines in pic 1 near the top of the two bottles :-)

Very finely carved! They are beautiful!

For ivory identification, see there and scroll down to the images:

Photo one is very low resolution, 37 KB. I downloaded it, cropped it to one third size, adjusted contrast, brightness (slightly darkened), and sharpness. The result was a 70 KB image. Enlarged this a couple of times and examined it with a magnifying glass. I could barely make out what appear to be Schreger lines on the shoulders. My conclusion is that Kyra is descended from eagles and could spot a mouse in dense grass a mile away from Angels two...

Val, not sure what lines you two experts are referring to, but if it's the criss-crossing lines on the shoulders/back of the bottles, I saw them but didn't know if they were Schreger lines since I have never seen them before. They are visible to me in the photos, but perhaps you are speaking of other lines?

No, you are seeing Schreger patterns, they appear as parallel lines or a crosshatch, depending on how the ivory was cut. They only appear on African elephant and mammoth ivory. Whiter Indian and other ivories don't have them.

I can see pics better from my smart phone than from other screens :-)
Wexval, thanks for the Eagle eye!
I prefer to spot bugs thousand kilometers far, lol! ;-D
