This is a beautiful, 1850's patent leather trunk. It is of the highest quality as evidenced by the embossed patent leather, heavy lock, high grade slats, Irish linen lining, large envelope with all four ties, ornate Scherenschnitte around the envelope, and edge, fall in covered wood compartment with makers label and brass closures. Many brass button head nails on the outside, and a solid Zinc bottom make this one solid, secure trunk. The lock in an British VR import as many pre 1860 locks were. We were not yet very prolific at many different types of manufacturing, so we were still importing many items from across the pond.

This is a beautiful piece -- what kind of treatment was done to the leather to have the "lumps" in them?

The trunk is covered with tooled, patent leather. The bumps are, I believe, a result of the breakdown of the chemicals used in the process. Most all patent leather trunks I have seen deteriorate in this manner.
