This box was made of very hard wood. Thanks to kyratango I found out that the box is made of olive wood. I believe the box was purchase as a Souvenir of a wonderful vacation in the south of France: Hyeres.

I am rather surprised that the box is in almost perfect shape. There are no cracks or other damages. Even the satin padding is in very good vintage condition. The only problem I found are two missing brass nails holding the hinges but I think I can replace them easily.

After finding similar boxes on line, I would date the box to the early part of the 1900's.

    Thanks for looking:)

Once again thanks for your help, kyratango!

It is olive tree wood :-)
Lot of Riviera touristic cities made them: Nice Mentone...
      Your box is charming!
I'm for now on holidays in south, not far from Hyères !!!

Kyratango, thanks for solving the mystery of the box. I checked on line forever and couldn't find one like it. When I entered "olive wood" I found several in just a second!
My daughter studied last year in Lyon, and we went to visit her. I really regret not taking a bit more time and traveling to the southern coast of France. You are very lucky to be there now. Enjoy your vacation and again, thanks for your help:)
