I bought this from a neighbor who wanted it out of her yard...it's a beauty...11 feet long with tongue...heartbroken because I have to leave it behind when I move west this year! Anyone have any info about this type of wagon?
Maureen: in the early 1900s there was quite afew great wagon and buggy manufactors,Weber,Deer,Studebaker,Durant & Dort.Check the 1900 sears catalong this may give you some ideas.Usually the maker put some sort of logo on the wagon.
I do not know a whole lot about this type of wagon . However I can tell you that what the horse goes between on your wagon is called a pair of shafts , not a tongue . Shafts like this are for one horse and a tongue would go between two horses . I have had two horse drawn buggies before and had a horse that would dirve to them . Mine also had shafts and were called a Doctor's buggy . This however is not one of those . I would say that it is a buckboard and it is very nice . If I had it I would want to get it into a barn to preserve it from the weather .
Thanks for the info, Lee and Nancy...this wagon is pretty special to me and I'll miss it...I do keep it in my garage all covered up for our PA winters and it's in great shape due to the previous owner doing the same. I know that we're not to post anything for sale on this site, but I would appreciate any suggestions from anyone for a venue to sell this when I move west. Thanks again!
It has been at least 30 years ago since I sold my last doctor's buggy . I have no idea of what they may sell for now . The last buggy I had I completly restored . The wheels had brass hubs and I polished them till they shined . I recovered the top with black vinyl and lined it with red velvet . I also did the seat in red velvet with gold buttons and diamond tuffting . I sold it sight unseen over the phone for $600.00 . Well the person may have seen it in the parade I had driven it in . I told one woman I worked with that I was thinking of selling it as I did not have a barn at the time to keep it in . She told one of her relatives and he called me that night and said he would be there the next day to pick it up . Which he did . I heard later that one like mine could bring as much as $1,000.00 . I only had a total of $300.00 into it so I was happy with the $600.00 . Like I said I have no idea what one would bring today . I have been out of the horse and buggy scene for over 30 years now .
Maureen :a lot of folks have good results with Craig's list.eBay is another good site and if you don't want to get into shipping just advertise it as a pick up only.Make sure you give yourself enough time to sell it,when your under pressure to move a item things really change around.You might considee a local auction with a reserve price.
Thanks, Lee...I am going to try Craigslist...unfortunately I live in a smaller town and we don't have a really big C-list following here, but I'll try...I think ebay may be out because the shipping would be in the hundreds...I like the idea putting it in a local auction, but only with a reserve price...in my area, with the economy the way it is now, we're seeing extremely low prices for even the big ticket items...I was at an auction on a farm last summer and an old full-size sleigh went for $25! If I didn't already have the wagon, I would've bought it...lol...I've got to get out of this 'big ticket item' stuff! Thanks again.

Nancy - haha! Really, I was shocked at the prices things were going for...I live in Altoona, PA, about thirty minutes or so from Penn State University. The auction I was at was in Martinsburg, a smaller town nearby, but one with tons of old farm houses and such...I've been trying to get the American Pickers here...they'd have a heyday!
Shucks , to far away for me . I bet the American Pickers would like to visit there however . I know they have been to PA. before . They must have missed your area .
Yeah, they went to eastern PA, we're in central PA...hopefully someday...
Hi, Maureen, what a sad delima, I sure wish I could buy it. My neighbor has two in their yard. They are similar to your's. I'm in So.E. Texas, so way too far from you, but one can only dream. Anyway, I just looked at a website that has lots of old wagons that they auction, but the only problem it that it's in Ok, so that wouldn't help you. I'm sure someone will buy it, it's just too awesome. It should be worth a lot. Thanks & have fun! Tina
