    Hey folks:

I purchased this nautical cross-stitch piece on eBay a few weeks back (and mounted it on the back of a denim jacket), but I'm still curious about its age and origins. When I received it, the piece had been clearly framed for a while and had some minor staining, but I washed it and it cleaned up nicely (aside from the pink thread, which was very faded on the front side, so I re-stitched that portion).

I googled the quote, and found one other embroidered piece with the same text, also being sold on eBay, but with no date or name. The other auction said "19th century," while mine has 1928 and TEDDY embroidered on it. Both of these pieces just seem too new for those dates.

    The text reads:

    "THE DEEDS THAT WERE
    WROUGHT BY YOU
    CLIPPER SHIP STAND OUT
    IN YOUR PAST A STAR"

Has anyone heard this passage? Do you think these pieces were made later in the 20th century based on earlier designs, or do you think the 1928 date is correct?

Very cool find Hunter ! Love it . Would have liked to seen back but I am going with the date 1928 is correct to piece and was part of a pre printed panel and may have been stitched around that time period when the panels were sold .

Thanks for your thoughts Mani! I should've photographed the back before sewing it on, but it looked pretty standard for hand-made embroidery (a lot of messy knots and whatnot). :)

p.s. the clipper ship era was actually in the 1850s, so even if 1928 is a correct date, I wonder what the reference to these sailing ships was meant to imply....?

Hunter here is one like yours with stamped name on bottom by maker of the panel . To bad I can't read it maybe it is a clue ?

Haha, Manikin - that's the one I bought! I re-stitched the parts you couldn't read because they had faded so much. ;)
