Back in the "good old days" before modern, multi-layer, reinforced fire hose, canvas hose was prone to springing a leak under pressure. This handy emergency clamp was fastened around the hose, temporarily sealing the leak until the hose could be replaced. The clamp consists of a large piece of heavy leather with brass pieces riveted onto opposite edges and a wingnut to tighten them together, encircling the hose. (In the picture a piece of appropriately sized cardboard tube substitutes for the hose which would be swollen by the water pressure.) A manufacturer's name is cast on one brass piece but it is too blurred to read. I do not know the age but I'd guess ca. 1900.

Thanks, Uncle Ron. Interesting and informative. Learned something new, which is not hard to imagine..... I know hardly anything! [;>)
