Many sellers of these batteries check the expiration date on the bottom of these and give these as the manufacturer date. But as these are long life batteries apparently they did have a long life.
These were made by the Nation Carbon Company which started making these batteries in 1896. In 1917 the company was acquired by Union Carbide. which still makes the Eveready battery.
As can be seen these were made for the old wooden wall phones like the one in which I have placed this pair. Despite the expiration date of January 1956 these batteries are easily 100 years old. Highly unlikely that they still work but no big as I have no land line.
Lots of wood wall phones out there but not so many batteries. Good to fill up that empty space.

      Hi,
I have a plain front 317-P just like yours, and also another with the picture frame front. Nice telephone. I added a flashlight battery holders (2 "C" cells) and hooked them up with my candlestick phones throughout the house as an intercom phone set. Guests and kids love to talk on them! Oh, and I put a photo copy of old cell batteries over the battery compartment to give it that look that you have with the real thing. Nice posting !
