This 17 3/8" wrench has traces of red paint. The open end is 5/8" wide and has a off centered hole below it. One side is marked "L39". Its from a old estate that included some railroad items and wagon era tools, but I am not certain what its for or why there is a additional offset hole below the open end.

Maybe it's not a wrench. It may be a handle that pivoted on a pin in that hole. The jaw would be a fork that moved something.

I was thinking that the hole was the key to the purpose too. But what ? It would give a lot of leverage.
