Danseuse Egyptienne, Patinated Bronze Mascot, Signed By Georges Omerth, Art Deco, Circa 1925

Omerth was a known sculptor of rare chryselephantine sculptures.
Bronze, Ivory, Marble. A book, "Bronzes of the 19th Century" mentions that practically nothing is known of this sculptor, not even his nationality. But - his bronzes, often statuettes of children, appeared in numbers on the market. They frequently incorporated ivory, and date visibly from the first years of the 20th century.

With the opening of Egypt's King Tuts Tomb in 1922, the demand for things Egyptian was at its peak in history. The 1922 discovery by Howard Carter and George Herbert of Tutankhamun's nearly intact tomb received worldwide press coverage. This is one of the nicest of Mascot bronzes of which there were more than several different ones in the Egyptian Flavour.

This mascot, one of one known triple patinated bronze, is a complete rarity, probably made for a discerning client who did not want the silvered bronze version, which is rare also. This mascot may or may not have also been a salesman's sample as it is the only colour patinated one seen thus far. The magnificent sale of the famous collection of Pasquale Giordano early this year, 2016, provided some of the best mascots for sale in years. I have not seen this mascot in mascot catalogs from the period, but that is probably because all mascot catalogs have not been found or published, as of yet.

Michel Legrand who has published some great hardcover books on mascots, has published this in 2 of his books. His version is silvered bronze only, and was unsigned. He erronously thought it was by Alonzo before as there is a one by Alonzo in a similar pose. Manikin is to be thanked for her help with the paperwork for bronzes obtained in this sale ! So appreciative of you Mani.

Oooh! I love your Danseuse!!! Georges Omerth was a great artist of the era. My grand Mother gave me a "Little Bacchant" chryselephantine, who is so gracious.

OH ! Nobody used "awesome". Well, I won't either, because at my age, I get sick of hearing that word. Guess our previous generation got sick of hearing "cool" . LOL !!
