When I first saw this vase, it was described by the seller, who did not know it was Bohemian, as being an Asian vase in the Chokin style. It was a very good description, actually, as Chokin is an ancient style of Japanese metal work that involves engraving copper and gilding it with gold and silver.

I feel this Harrach vase was definitely intended to imitate that art form. The body of this vase is actually a uv reactive custard glass (very pale white-yellow) but it is entirely covered in a golden apricot enamel, with accents of gold gilt and what I believe to be silver. It does look very metallic, and has very detailed enamel work of blossoms, leaves and a dragonfly. The base is signed in the typical Harrach numbering system 520/1 P.180, and stands 8 5/8" tall. I believe it dates to about 1880.

I think Chokin is a great description, but the base is a dead giveaway! Fantastic buy Michelle, beautiful and unusual. Love the dragonfly.

Thank you, Rick. I really like it too - I think of the base color as sort of deep apricot gold.
