I have a family heirloom, an Eero Saarinen cabinet, that was specifically designed as a stereo console in the 1950s when Eero was designing furniture for Knoll Associates.

My wife's late grandfather had been the lawyer for Hans Knoll (the founder of Knoll Associates), and friend to Knoll and Saarinen, and helped to create the company in the 1940s. This cabinet was a gift from Eero to my wife's grandfather for his earlier services and long friendship.

Unfortunately my wife's late grandmother stored it on a porch in direct sunlight for decades and the finish is faded and looks rather worn. I'm curious about refinishing it, or if I should even do that. I don't want to diminish the value or the history but right now it's rather an eye sore.

I'm seeking any advice on this one. Also curious if anyone knows its worth. We aren't planning to sell it (it will be passed down to our kids) but I admit I am curious as to its value, and perhaps should have it insured.

Overall though, I'd love to have this wonderful cabinet restored to its former glory as an historical piece of mid-century American architectural history.

(I will take better pictures, these came off my phone in haste).

I say yes, finish is too far gone. it would look beautiful crisp and clean finish.

Will it diminish the value if it is re-finished though?

A good restoration should not affect the value much at all.

Agree with Phil, just take your time and it will look FAB!

Found a local who specializes in this kind of restoration. I've been quoted $1,500. Seems like a lot but since it is a family piece I'm willing to pay that but wanted to put it out here for others' opinions too.

Also, any way to determine (ball park) what it might be worth?
