The stereograph was an early form of photography. Though they were introduced a few years earlier, stereoscopes, which were tools to view the mounted photographs such as this one, featuring Western views, were not available in San Francisco until 1859. The pictures were often beautiful, rare landscapes.
Most California stereoscopes (or stereoviews) were distributed by Lawrence & Houseworth, an optical shop.
