Tool has a wooden handle with a cast ball with a 4 stamped on it on one end and a curved, sharpened knife on the other end. Appears to be some sort of weighted draw knife. It's on the wall at the Seafood Barn at Holden Beach, NC. Any idea what it is?

A "turpentine hack" is a type of scorp used to cut channels in pine trees in order to make the sap run out, for collection to make turpentine, pitch, rosin, etc. The tree was hacked higher and higher on the trunk as previous hacks stopped producing. The weight gave more power, cutting on the down-stroke, to gouge into the tree even when working overhead. A much more aggressive process than collecting sugar maple sap to make maple syrup, "hacking" eventually kills the tree.
