Thank you for the information! Is there any other info you can give me, like what the writing says on the top left?
    3. Dizzydave Dizzydave, 8 years ago
IT WOULD BE ARTIST INFO, I DON'T TRANSLATE BUT I THINK SOMEONE ON CW CAN, JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE IF THEY POP IN.
    4. chananrubin, 8 years ago
I'm really eager to see it what it says

ok my chinese aint fantastic but shall attempt at it

      ????
      ?? means years
? is the cranes u see it symbolises purity, cleanlines aka righteousness and a kind of immortal being
? is a type of tree that has ever living and hardy roots and is a symbol of longevity, goal oriented and a long suffering

Together, it is a auspicious greeting that may your years may have the Chinese virtues of character sophistication and may you enjoy a long life

oops the chinese characters dont show
    7. chananrubin, 8 years ago
Thank you! What year in particular does it mention?
    8. fleafinder fleafinder, 8 years ago
Not sure but is there a stamp/sign then the rest of CW might know.Or perhaps can youtake a zoomed in picture of the red words. Red words are usually the name of the person and from there you might find the period he existed

      Just posted close up image.

DizzyDave, are you sure it is Japanese?
    11. Dizzydave Dizzydave, 8 years ago
I just knew what they were called, Im use to seeing these from Japan. But like I said, I can't translate so We had to wait on someone who could. So Fleafinder is the guy on translating.
    12. fleafinder fleafinder, 8 years ago

So I guess it is Chinese, DizzyDave which of the two dates would you assume it is?
    15. chananrubin, 8 years ago
Fleafinder, the language you translated was Chinese right?
    16. fleafinder fleafinder, 8 years ago
      yep i did
    17. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
Very nice piece, the fitted case is great too!

Dave, Shibayama is inlay work, this piece is etched and colored, so Shibayama doesn't fit what it is :-)

Fleafinder, glad you joined CW, so we can have a translator for those characters!

Nevadablades wife, who is Japanese, may help with the signature when they come back.
    18. chananrubin, 8 years ago
Thank you greatly for the plethora of information.
    19. chananrubin, 8 years ago
kyratango, would you also agree that is the earlier of the two dates that fleafinder suggested?
    20. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
From the ivory patina and the case, I think it is rather 50's.
    21. chananrubin, 8 years ago
The pictures distort the true color of the piece, it has more patina than the pictures show.
    22. chananrubin, 8 years ago
Has anyone been able to identify the characters in red?
    23. chananrubin, 8 years ago
Fleafinder, I'm looking at the link you posted. The characters in my mind dont match up to the ones you suggested.
    24. antique.7, 8 years ago
I would say it is from 1899.
    25. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
That's pretty imprecise, which month? ;-)
    26. antique.7, 8 years ago
Out of the two dates fleafinder suggested
    27. antique.7, 8 years ago
kyratango, when do you think the cup was made?
    28. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
Antique.7, between the two dates given by Fleafinder, as I said in comment #20, I think rather 1959 :-)
