I don't know much about these bronze bookends. They do seem to be from the Art Deco era-with the dress and headband, they look like Flappers. I have found a few pictures of the same ones online, but only these are painted! Would be interested in your thoughts as to whether they originally came painted, or 'au natural'. My guess is that they paint was added afterwards, in which case-should I remove the paint? If so, how? There are no markings that I can see. I just love them!

You didn't find the correct bookends on the web. Dizzy nailed it - these are not bronze, but are all original. Removing the paint would ruin them.

These bookends are listed in the Antique Bookend Reference Guide by Kuritzky > "The Encyclopedia of Bookends".

Excellent info! I did some more research-thanks so much. What I don't know-and you experts out there most certainly will-is the relation of these painted bookends to the unpainted ones. It seems to be the same cast/mold. So were they all originally painted? Were some painted/others not? Bronze vs spelter-which one and how do I know? With more info comes more questions. Thanks too for introducing me to Loie Fuller. Coincidentally, my daughters are dancers.

Original Polychrome paint. Spleter is a white metal, you can look at bottom and tell difference. Same casting, these would have been the better bookends rather than non painted. You got a Great Set!
