    One would put this grater on top of a sauce pan. It is a bit over 7" across the top. The patent number of 1921936 dates from 1933. Does not mean it is from 1933 but gives one a starting point.
    There are a pair of feet that allow this to be set on top various pans. The double boiler I have it setting on in the last photo is a bit small but it would still work.
    As for use seems like anything that would go into a grater would work from this. From cheese to onions to potatoes.

      Haven't seen one of these for years. My grandmother had a small grape arbor and her and my mother would make grape jelly every year, when I was a kid. I remember them using one of these for that jelly making process. Neat item!!
