Unusual for American cards, these cards are reminiscent of the hand colored German lithographed cards of the day.

The photo on the right shows why this facility should have been closed instead of Pensacola or San Diego by the Clinton Administration. At Great Lakes NTC, during the long winter they have to drill and exercise indoors. In San Diego, some mornings in December and January you have to wear a jacket, and sometimes you don't take it off until noon.

    You mean Orlando?

Orlando is correct. (One of those cushy Florida towns.

... That is where the women went in my day and some of the lucky guys. In San Diego Boot we were told that if the women couldn't do it the men in Orlando didn't have to either. If the women could only do 35 push ups, then that is all they could make the men do.

Made some of us rethink our choice of Boot Camp. Also, we saw very few women in the 2 months time in San Diego besides medical personnel. A few of them were good looking when we arrived, and they all were by the time we left. And they knew it. It must have very good for their egos.

About "Great Mistakes" (Great Lakes) ...
I was in Boot in December in San Diego. We were half way through and The more senior companies got chow first a with only the new arrivals being ahead of the Senior Company. One morning about Dec. 30th we got to the chow hall grinder to find an additional 1,000 men in front of us and wondered how that could be. We found out they were new arrivals from Great Lakes, because it was closed due to snow. Why choose to keep the only boot camp to be the one that closes due to snow. In San Diego we rarely, had rain and the most common weather difficulty was fog.

Later, when I was in the fleet I learned from "Great Mistakes" boots that they marched in gyms during the winter.

My father was at Great Lakes, it's interesting to see these picture postcards and know this is what he saw while there.

    AR8Jason...thanks for the stories :)
SMD...what I like about these is you can tell how new it is by the lack af any trees. I am going to post some more that will show "boot camp".
