Love this chair! I just bought at an estate sale. Does anyone know anything about this chair? Age? Who made it? I searched the internet and couldn't find a chair even similar to this chair. The stuffing appears to be horse hair and maybe some moss. Can't wait to get it cleaned up and in my living room.

Oh my, that is some rocking chair! Something from Whoville, perhaps? LOL I am looking forward to seeing this piece of magnificence all cleaned up.
I don't think it started life as a rocking chair, however.
Really nice Heavy Empire Style revival and these look period to the 1870's. Not sure either on the rocking chairs, probably never started life as a bad rocking chair. If not they may be more original to the empire period.
Looking at it closer, I wonder if this is a "marriage" of different pieces of furniture. The curled bits almost look like staircase finials rather than something belonging to an armchair. The wood doesn't look the same throughout the chair, either. I've made several searches and didn't find a single thing that looks like your chair. If there is a reputable antique furniture shop near you, it might be a good idea to let them look at it.
I have seen this style before, and you have to realize that all things are not on the internet. I see no marriage. This is more of the rare heavier pieces of Empire furniture. I have seen many with the curls but none are on the internet right now, as the internet is rather new. The only marriage is that someone made it into a rocking chair which negates the value. Too bad it is not a pair of chairs.
Phil - I know that not all things are on the internet. :-))) Must just be the light, because it looks like different woods rather than just a continuous single wood. I did find one or two chairs that look very similar, but the heavy curling of the arms was not as dramatic as with this chair.
Empire furniture is dramatic and more a mans style which is a noted fact. The lighter wood on the arms is from wear which most chairs will show with very well used furniture. I collect Empire Furniture and Regency Furniture which was Englands version during the Empire period in France. American Empire came mainly during the second Empire period in France. The American Empire also exaggerated some elements, hence the larger than life arms. When I started to collect Empire, I bought all the books I could on the period, and being a book dealer at the time, I could look up books that were coming out and what was out there, so I could get books that were long out of print. I studied Empire intensely. I am not always right, but I know married furniture also, which this piece shows no signs of. If I found a piece like this chair I would buy if for sure, going with a lot of my decor.
