I have a 38" wide and 29"tall including frame Zara Ellwood painting and would like some information on this and possible pricing.

   Zara Ellwood paintings go from anywhere in the neighborhood of $500 - $5000, depending on condition and subject matter. She was a painter living in Greenwich Village NYC, and painted back in the 1930's and 1940's. Some say she was an alcoholic. But, her work is very stunning. I should know. I have one of her best pieces. She remains pretty much a mystery, and very little is known about her. The big question is, whether she was a member of the historical 'Ellwood' family that emigrated here from England back in the 1800's. The family made a fortune in the barbed wire business, and the family members were artisans. If she is proven to be a member of this family, then her work would be considered historical, which would add to the value of her work. For now, I'm not selling mines. That is, unless I got an astonishing offer on the one that I have. My gut tells me that her work is going to be very valuable, if it already isn't. Hope I've helped you some.

   I have this same exacxt painting, same frame, hanging in my home. My great grandmother received this as a gift from her husband and it was passed on to my mother. I have no other information about how or where it was purchased. I am now wondering how to tell if it is an origianl or reproduction. Given that it is in the same frame as the one pictured above i'm leaning toward reproduction. The paint does look raised and textured. Any tips?

   I have seen a similar painting as well before, although the vase was different and the branches were different as well. I think Zara did several version of the same flowers with slight variation. I am sure both yours and mine are originals.

   I have a similiar painting only the subject is peonies. It was my grandmothers, I loved her and I love my Zara.

   I have the same picture and frame. I purchased it in 1975 at a Salvation Army store in Philadelphia . Would be nice to find that connection to the English Ellwood Family. I think it's a beautiful piece.
