This is an Irving brothers trunk or chest. It seems to be made out of wood with a canvas type material covering in places. Metal edging and clasps. It has C.D.B stamped on both sides. It's has been to Buenos Aires & Montevideo as there is a paper stamp on it. Also a Southern British Railway Section stamp with Tonbridge on it and delivered luggage. Inside is a pale blue and white striped ( I think cotton) lining, and the Irving Brothers label. Also there is a newspaper clipping inside dated 1953 but I have a feeling the trunk is older than that. I've googled Irving Brothers but there is not a lot of info on the web. Thanks, I would love to know roughly how old it is.

The Trunk is older. Sometime around the late 1880s into the 1890s , I would imagine judging by the lock and hardware.
      In an 1891 article:"Glasgow and it's environs"pg.129
It states that the company was founded 30 years prior to the article. That puts the start at 1861.One of the most important of Glasgow industries. Located for the first ten years at 157 Buchanan street Glasgow ,with the growth of the company they relocated to 86 Renfield street, 48 to 52 Bath street Glasgow. It further states that they had an immense frontage of plate glass to display all of their
products, specializing in handbags and overland trunks.
This trunk has a wonderful interior makers label that you just don't see that often.
good luck and thanks for sharing.
