Picked this clock up yesterday at a local antique shop. I am trying to figure out exactly what model it is. The back states OWL Wm l gilbert clock company, the internals have june 3 1879 stamped on it.

Welcome Drossmill06. You've pretty much said it all. You have an "Owl" from the Gilbert Clock Company. Reportedly from circa 1891. The "June 8 1879" is probably a patent date. Here's a document which details another Gilbert Movement with that date stamped on one of the movement plates: http://www.awci.com/wp-content/uploads/clock-tech-guides/R-E-Swan/RE-Swan-Sheet-74.pdf

Here's another example of an "Owl" : http://www.antiquesnavigator.com/d-76418/antique-gilbert-kitchen-shelf-clock-owl-model-walnut.html

Hope that helps to solve your mystery. If so, please indicate "Mystery Solved" in your listing. If not, and you have more questions, please ask away. :)
