I thought I had posted these before but now we have our own translator, NevadaBlades and his lovely wife that I see help with these type of things.

Hopefully the paper in pic 2 actually did come with the plates and can be translated so that we all know what these are made of. They are pretty unique like snow flakes...all different.

    Crossing my fingers! Thank you!

Aren't they lovely. I'd guess bamboo. Is that a whale or a large tuna fish on the label?
    3. jscott0363 jscott0363, 8 years ago
Very nice! Could this be sandalwood that they're made of?
    4. shareurpassion shareurpassion, 8 years ago
I don't know Mr J. I think it has something to do with the parts of a whale. The forks especially, it looks like marrow at the end of them but not sure.

Gillian, it's a whale and I think it says Sushi above it. Waiting for Nevada to see if he can help. Thanks

Nevada Blades...thank you for the love. I'm crossing my fingers that you may be able to help with this. Maybe it would be a good idea for me to gather a few like things and go to a large library. They would be able to help me there and honestly, I'm pretty sure I would get more info than on the web on some ones I can't find. It would probably be faster too because the books are right there.

Hi, it's me. Sorry I'm late coming in here. Let's see,.......... first off, above the picture of the whale, it says "Kujiranohige", which translates to "whale whiskers". The full page loosely translates to information about whale whiskers and whale teeth, though there is no information or connection between whales and the plates and forks. It doesn't say that the plates and forks are made from whale parts.

We think the plates and forks are used for small snacks, such as cake or pastries, not for serving sushi. When we lived in Japan, we used almost identical items for snacks. Our plates and forks, though, were lacquered black and red. Sushi is typically served in a large 'community' tray. The sushi pieces are then transferred to individual small plates that typically hold only 1 or 2 pieces. The thicker, "handle" ends of the hashi (chop sticks), are used to pick up and transfer the sushi from the large tray to the small individual plates. The hashi is used in the normal way to then pick up and eat the sushi. Hope we were of some help. [;>)

I think I forgot to mention that the small individual plates that are used to eat the sushi from are typically made of ceramics or pottery, not wood or lacquered plastic. Sushi is never eaten with a fork of any kind or style. Sushi is always eaten with hashi or by hand. Most males typically use their hands and most females typically use hashi. [;>)

That's great info KJ! Thanks for our cultural enrichment program.

Sue it's a great set; it has that very pared back, under designed style of the Japanese put into utilitarian objects. I would use these for entree plates.

"It doesn't say that the plates and forks are made from whale parts."

Sure it does, right on the gold sticker, whale whiskers are baleen, a part of whales. The entire point of the leaflet is so the host can be informative when serving their guests, " look you are being served Kasutera on a whale".

T.A. ! So you ARE still here!!! Perfect and thank you very, very much for the correction. I should have replaced the photo of the foil sticker as I don't think the lettering came out well enough and was therefore overlooked. I sure thought the forks just had to be some type of bone by the looks of them. Much appreciated!!

OHHH, I just looked up Kasutera and I have had this, my bro and his girlfriend get these cakes for my mom every holiday. Well, they are...different? It takes a moment to get used to the texture and taste as far as this Westerner goes ;) Very cool.
