I picked this off the street in an old box years ago -- I say ww1 because along with it were two RAR Howitzer gun covers so I am only assuming it is the same age. No markings or anything -- curious hole in the bottom -- have no idea what it would have been used for or really how old it might be.. just poking around on a Saturday afternoon and thought I would ask... and yes that is a very large beer bottle in the background of the first pic...

If it is WWI, might that hole in the bottom be there to let water out? -- soldiers often had to wade across streams and rivers. Just a guess. [;>)
I had thought of that too actually -- hope someone out there might know -- the thing is a stiff as a board and it one of those things I have no idea what to do with...
Interesting -- no screw attachment on the eye of the hole -- perhaps a piece passed through?

Might be an artillery bag -- makes sense because I found it with the big gun covers --
maybe the hole it to make sure the ordinance does not stay wet??
In WWI, powder bags were still used in some larger guns. On ships, they were called "pass boxes" & a powder charge in a silk (or similar material) would be carried to the gun. Some ranges required more that 1 charge for more range. This could also be a cannon muzzle cover. Either calls the rivet hole in the bottom into question.
Thanks for the info bb2 -- seems to fit several possible uses -- even a smaller kit bag -- but the rivet hole in the bottom seems to narrow the possibilities....
It could be a sea anchor for a small boat.
Thanks Ralph -- did a bit of research on that but it seems the shape of those are more conical with a fixed ring around the top to keep it open in the water... although there was a canvas example that looked similar...
Just remembered. All the artillery muzzle covers I've seen had a canvas strap handle on the end.
