1943 Zinc Penny Roll ... War Pennies

Due to the military need for copper, in 1943 the US produced Zinc Coated Steel Pennies. To many this is a novelty and to some even it is "news." They are uncommon but not hardly rare. Here is a roll of them and three selected for closer inspection. The zinc helped them keep from rusting.

Funny thing is, today's pennies are really zink too, just with a copper coating.

True. But the ones today don't have the steel part and corrode very badly when the copper plate is penetrated. I hate today's pennies. We have some great designs, in the new pennies, but why collect them as they are going to corrode and be worthless? Now if the mint made a few out of solid copper, for collectors ...

did you do the magnet test
  17. Lostinspace Lostinspace, 4 months, 1 day ago
I love the wheat pennies also. When I first learned about doing the magnet test, I held my breathe. Of course I wasn't that lucky.

Lundy there is no need for a magnet "test." They are Zinc coated steel. Magnets do stick.

I found 7 at an estate sale yesterday. Four cost $1.25 and three $1.00. I bought the 4 as the three showed sign of rust.

do you know how many are left 1943 the big money coin
  20. AR8Jason AR8Jason, 3 months, 1 day ago
By big money coins, do you mean copper pennies for 1943?

The Mint has denied their existence saying none were ever made. Fakes have been made by plating zinc coated steel ones and by changing the dates on a copper one.

To have a copper penny from 1943, is to have a fake, according to the mint.
