Had forgotten these were packed away... These were passed down from past relatives that have told: They came from England many generations ago, passed down many times. We don't know much about them except from pictures on the Internet.

They are 9 inches tall, they don't appear to have any markings. there is crazing in the finish.

... and the back too in the case of Staffordshire flat backs.

This is the closest I could come to your pair of King Charles Spaniels. Some of the paint on these looks green, but it is the lighting. These ones aren't flat backed, and no markings.

So many different pairs on the internet - red, blue all colours. They're a very popular collectable.

These are copper lustre staffordshire Cavalier King Charles spaniels. This pair look to be original 19th century, but a good photo of the underneath would be helpful.

Yours are only decorated on the front side, which is apparent from looking at the ears, so that makes them a flatback. Their bases should be solid and there should be a tiny hole in the back. That hole prevents collapse in the kiln.

OH... So helpful information here... what appears to be paint (different colors in the picture)... are actually a bright copper color... almost appears to be actual copper or brass in that it is real shiny and does not seem to have any indication that it might be paint - or indicate that it might be thin in places. I posted three more pictures (took one down) of the bottom of each and the backs.

Apologies for telling you your Spaniels weren't flat backed. I'm grateful to Efesgirl for putting me right.

Yes, it's paint. Gold lustre paint. I lived in the UK and have seen a great many of these fireside mantelpiece spaniels.

My mom called them "Wally dugs" – google this. (We are Scots.) They are lovely!

I love these... So often you only come upon one! I take them home anyway. I wish I had a real Straffdshire Spaniel. Has the breed gone extinct?? Ha Ha!
I just never ever SEE ONE!
