Western Germany came in existence in 1949 and I believe it became West Germany about 1953. This set is marked Western Germany which makes it easy to date it. It has many of the pieces in the vanity sets I have posted recently. They do look like torture tools. It is about 5 1/2" long making it easy to fit in a purse. This is one of those items which was closed and I felt the need to open and I was delightfully surprised to see it filled with all these manicure set pieces and to see it was from Western Germany.
The piece 3rd from the right in photo two is the piece I need find in tortoiseshell.
Being a hop, skip and a jump away from Germany means I see these kinds of manicure sets often, but they're always in a black case and there is always at least one tool missing!
My wife has a similar set, made in Japan, from the mid '60s, in a light yellow, with matching case. No design on the case, though, like your nice German one. [;>)
