I bought this plate at an auction for $10. The auction described it as Japanese, and it features two cranes and a turtle near the water's edge. It's a 9" plate, and I would love to know more about it. I added a picture of the marking on the back of the plate.

Update: a friend of mine born to Chinese parents said the first symbol on the back of the plate is a nine and one of the symbols represents Hong Kong. However, she's very rusty on her Chinese. She's sending the picture to relatives for translation. Hmm? Is it Chinese or is it Japanese made for the Chinese market?

Does anyone know anything about this beautiful plate? Thanks!

Japanese satsuma - my guess would be around 1930-40, but just a guess.

I think it might be Kutani. The two right hand characters are Nine Valleys.

I am no expert but the first tow characters appear to be Kutani. Here is a link to the Japanese Kutani marks on gotheborg.com, a great resource for Japanese & Chinese pottery marks. If you don’t find it here, you can return to his home page

the trouble is we are not in a kiln combination in japanese , but we are in a firm or merchant combination by means of the japanese symbol DO, can,t crack this

sorry to intrude, can,t break the kanji, this must be good , full signed mark not diluted

grass , cherry blossom reverse , grass or bamboo garlands is always a good sign

obverse birds real full contrast black and white

      tonality difference in the treetrunk

this can,t be later then early taisho IMO this mejji period

and even when i am talking complete bs , it is still a nice plate

that,s all i can do otherwise i have to buy expertise
