I picked this up for a couple dollars yesterday at a junk shop. what should i use to repair the nose? there must be some kind of modelling clay which will stick and harden, no? and what kind of paints do people use to repair chalkware? any info appreciated! thanks!

The hardest part will probably be matching the paint. Mixing your own Plaster of Paris is probably best but I have used pre-mixed Spackle right out of the can to make repairs on chipped plaster lamp bases with excellent results. (Some Spackles are oil based and probably should be avoided.) A little moisture on the exposed old plaster will draw the new plaster in and form a strong bond. Don't try for a perfect nose when adding the patch - it is much easier to sculpt the new plaster after it has set.
And, oh yeah but you probably know, seal it before you paint it.
thank you artfoot! i have a cousin who i think will be doing the paint mixing/matching. she's very good at that. i'm glad you mentioned that about the sealant - because no, i didn't know!

Thanks Rick55. if i like the results, i'll post it. it will be a while because my cousin isn't visiting me till spring. she's living in the south of france these days.
Look forward to seeing the results. In the meantime, it would be interesting to research who the figure is supposed to depict, and if there was a female to go with this male.
