Last year I was on holiday in Sri Lanka. This is a statue of the Hindu deity Ganesha, I can't remember where in Sri Lanka I bought him. I was looking at him today and I hadn't realized the beautiful colour of the stone. The stone itself is predominantly green, but as you can see from the photo's there is array of colours. I was wondering if it is a mixture of different stones. I know there are several types of semi precious stones, in Sri Lanka, moonstones, garnets the list is endless. To me the statue as the look of a stone called Labradorite, which is part of the Moonstone family, I have researched to see if this stone exist in Sri Lanka, from my research it doesn't. I was wondering if anybody on CW would have a idea? You can see he has been beautifully carved and he really is lovely.
    Many thanks for looking.

Labradorite is also called spectrolite, and it's mined in Sri Lanka. Beautiful!!!

      Sorry - it's a variety of labradorite.

Oh thank you martika, he's a good size 2 1/2 inches 6 cm long and 1 3/4 inches 4 cm at its widest. I've looked to see if spectrolite is found in Sri Lanka but I couldn't find anything.

Hi Jean. I read on the net spectrolite is called also rainbow moonstone (not to be confused with the 'real moonstone'). More websites states it's mined in Sri Lanka too. I think there is a bit of confusion on the net about these, so they can easily confuse us. Soon I will provide links, but now I have to run to work!!! :)

Thank you for the information martika. Looking at the pics on the web I don't think this Ganesha is rainbow moonstone, the colour of this stone doesn't look in my opinion the same. I still think it looks more like Labradorite. I have to admit the web is very confusing.

The Ganeshas I've looked at of rainbow moonstone have all been of this colour.

Hello Jean. I put rainbow moonstone in the google and mostly this kind of stone come up, you have to scroll it bit down:
      http://www.hitherandyononline.com/Silver_jewelry/silver_jewelry.htm
But I can see that 'milky' variety too. I think if it is called rainbow moonstone, that should mean colourful.

I read here where it is mined:
      http://www.creol.dk/en/stenguide/moonstone
I think now I'm confused about it, lol. I take the most information from the web, but the internet can provide misleading information too. Maybe you can contact some Sri Lankan mining company with your question, they can give you a better answer.

Hi martika, I was looking online and the nearest country to Sri Lanka that produce Labradorite is Madagascar. I'm still leaning towards Labradorite. I really appreciate your help and your links.

I never doubted it's a labradorite. Just I thought it's a 'sort' of labradorite, like spectrolite or rainbow moonstone, what would be mined in Sri Lanka. But I checked more websites and there is some contradiction.

Hi martika, yes the websites are really confusing. Sri Lanka as many gemstones, Moonstones, Shapphires, Garnets and many more, but there is no Labradorite, that I have come across on the net.
