hi everybody, i am trying to find how old is this trunk and all you can tell me about. On the top there is a stamp showing this trunk went to Melbourne????

The only thing I know for sure is that I love it and wish it was mine, don't know if its american made or not, I'll let the big boy's answer that. love the half round slats and the hardware on it, is it metal or canvas covered ?
Very interesting trunk! Based on about 40 years of research on trunks I would say this is most likely an American made "sample trunk", which was a very strong, heavy duty trunk used by traveling salesmen. Probably from the 1890's to 1920's period. That's because of the extra slats, style of the hardware, large size latches, brass lock, etc. But some of the heavy duty trunks were also sold to individuals who wanted an extra strong trunk. There were so many companies making these trunks during that time that it's hard to know exactly how all of them were used and the exact age. But it's a great looking old trunk!
Trunk # 928 listed on collectors weekly, posted 3 years ago is a similar "sample trunk".
It claims to be from the maker: Mcleod Hawthorne & Co. Montreal .

Incidentally Mcleod Hawthorne & Co. had a devastating fire in 1904 in Montreal
with over $200.000 in damage.
