Here's one I could use some help on. I picked this up at a auction last saturday. The guy was a major collector of mining stuff in his day, he's in his eighties now and selling everything off. I think this is a ingot mold? Gold, Silver or Lead? Gold and Silver were both mined around here. It measures about 10" wide and 14" long. I think it reads BB & S in each ingot pocket It weighs in at about 27 lbs. It's rusty like water has sat in it. Should I try cleaning it up? Any Ideals on Value. rockerville@aol.com

Hopeing someone into mining stuff will see this and comment.
Thanks BOGIE262, I am still hopeing someone can shed some light on this? Was it from an assayer, a mine, or what? any ideal on value?
Thanks officialfuel. I am still looking for info on this item.
Yes it is csat iron, very heavy.
cast iron
Good question, I don't know. Maybe because the melting point of silver or gold is lower? If I had enough gold I could try it out. Thanks for the imput. Still a mystery.
I would think it would work with any material as long as the melt has a lower melting point than the mold:
cast iron= 2300 F
gold = 1946 F
silver = 1762 F
lead = 621 F
With that being said-- I have seen cast iron used for lead (bullets), but I don't know what is typically used for gold or silver. Anyone know what is typically used for gold/ silver molds?

Thanks for your imput scottvez, every bit helps. I agree with your comment.
Thanks for the like officialfuel
Nice ingot mold. It would be nice to cast some gold ingots in that !
According to my information, graphite is commonly used, (today, at least) for both gold and silver molds.
On a different tack, does anyone have any information on vintage Tentex silver ingots, or bars? I picked up a nice 10 oz. bar today, and can't seem to find out any information at all on Tentex.
