I was quite happy to find this beautiful compact in the thrift shop this afternoon. This is what is called a convertible compact, made for both loose and solid powder.

I used to have a small collection of compacts back in the 1980s/1990s, but sold them in the mid-1990s to an antique dealer in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan.
I will post a link in the Comments which explains how to date Stratton compacts.
    Thanks for stopping!

Lovely. Stratton always did it right.
I love the machined backs of them, and the enameling is so nice!

That's nice looking Bonnie, is it a full size compact, or smaller?
A few years ago I saw a compact that sold for over $200. on Ebay and caught my interest. I started looking for them at thrifts, estate sales, and the flea. I've gotten 8-10? now, maybe more, all for under $5., a small 14k one, and two full size, are sterling. I really haven't researched them that much, not my thing, just an interest, but like everything, there's a collector for it, that will pay for the found treasure, because they might not have the time to search. The best thing about a compact, is just that, you can have a large collection, in a small place. I guess that's why I like pocket knives! :^)

bill - this is a full size compact. Many people don't realize their worth, even as simply a design object.

Judy - Must have been the last of someone's collection. There was another one there with swans on the top, but it was damaged and the mirror was broken - and the shop had it priced four Euros more than the one I bought! Go figure.

karen - I haven't seen any really nice compacts in a very long time, so was surprised to find this one.

jbing - now you have something else to search for at the flea markets!

I like the Stratton's stuff from Compacts, lipstick mirrors, tie pins and all sorts. Stratton I believe is related somehow to the other great compact maker KIGU. Vintage retro stuff.

GeodeJem - it's seldom that I find a compact this good, especially in a second hand shop.
