there is a zipper on back and hollow inside.. face plastic.. any idea what its called? was it to put pjs in for overnight or ??

She is called a mask face doll and is a PJ holder , they did make smaller one's as purses . The face has no back it is like a mask and the head stuffed . Usually made of celluloid which was banned due to fire hazard . This is from around 1950's maybe late 40's .
You could look for a tag inside like this one has . It is similar to yours
