From where did you get it?
    2. Mfrastructures, 7 years ago
Found it in an old barn in the SF bay area California.

This might be a rough one to research. I am assuming that 1793 is the death date. What about researching the history of the barn/previous owners? There was no "California" in 1797.

In regard to the last name of Williams, from Google:

"Williams (surname) Williams is a patronymic form of the name William that originated in medieval England and Wales. The meaning is derived from son or descendant of William, the Northern French form that also gave the English name William."

The owner of the barn died several years ago.

There should be some sort of city hall public records available in regard to the previous owners of the barn/land. You have to research the area and that barn in particular.

Any of the former barn's owners could have emigrated from England and put that in storage as it was no longer in use. Perhaps it happened to just get stuck there- lost, for a few decades, forgotten for even longer.

      How old is the barn?

How big is it? Could it be a snuff box?

Just a note, the area was called California hundreds of years before it was a state, circa 1530's.
