I got this last week from Geri, along with some other silver. It's an old necklace/chain and photo pendant from the Zeeland area of Holland. Neither of us have seen a necklace (if it is a necklace) like this and have no idea why the chain would be adjustable. The chain can be pulled - one side at a time- through that silver "knob". The whole chain ends up being uneven.
Open to suggestions!

Nothing wrong with it being adjustable if it's a watch chain or a muff chain. I don't see a clasp, and the pullover style would slide around and could be easier to loose, so the slide keeps it centered and tightened at the neck.
Before the wrist watch (1903), people wore watches on their clothing, either in a pocket or displayed like jewelry. How the watch was worn depend on your outfit, and a long chain enabled it to be worn in a number of ways. Watches always had chains to prevent losing them.
