I don't know very much about costume jewelry just that this piece has been around me for a long time. It is heavy and missing many of the little colored stones. I've always wondered about the history of this piece as it is quite the looker.

      Battered yet beautiful.
It looks old, at least WWII to me, but I am just pretending I know stuff about jewellery. I hope the experts chime in!

Definitely an older piece, with a C clasp and a very interesting swivel "hinge". I've never seen a hinge like that, but I know who can help you. On their FB page you can include photos. The owner, Ann, is extremely knowledgeable.

It's also possible that someone else here knows what sort of swivel hinge that is and can provide info.

Hi Efesgirl Thank you for forwarding the link to Ann's fb site. I have sent her a message and asked if she would care to take a look at the photos. I hope to hear back from her so I can add more information about the brooch. Your comments are always appreciated:)

It looks to me like a 1930's or 40's pot metal brooch. Most of those brooches are large and heavy:)
      Happy New Year!

Thanks for pointing me in this direction freiheit. I checked out pot metal brooches from this era and have seen similar ones on etsy and other sites:) It is heavy for sure!!

Thank you Efesgirl and freiheit for helping me solve this mystery. After viewing similar designs on Etsy and other sites this pot metal piece is from the 30's or 40's. I did not see any with the swivel hinge though. Knowing what it is made of and the era is great:))

Isn't that just a bent pin back, that springs into the clip? Nice colors and look! :^)

I opened it and yes billretirecoll it doesn't swivel I guess it's just a bent pin back. Thanks for your comment I didn't even know what pot metal ment so have learned it's history from a couple of members Efesgirl and freiheit and about the term bent pin back from you. Excellent!!
