This cabinet has been in my family for over 50 years. My parents bought it at auction and were told it was late 18th C. Someone more recently suggested it might be early 19th C. Can anyone suggest how I can determine its vintage more accurately? We haven't been able to find an expert in this type of antique in our city.

It's about 5'6" tall, hand-painted imagery (not decals), lots of ormolu, original glass and mirror (everything on it is original as far as I know).

    Thank you!

If this was 18th century you should be able to find a similar item on the internet. Similarly if it were nineteenth century.

Its more mid 20th century to me. The reproductions were being made well into the 20th century and have had seen these before. Don't assume its a vintage piece when you buy anything and antique dealers often sell repros they "say" they know nothing about except its "old". If you had better photos there might be a better consensus.

This is a 1950's or early 1960's reproduction. I don't even need to look at the hardware. The pose of the figures is what gives it away. If it was an original 18th century piece, their pose would be more formal. Her hair is completely wrong. The mademoiselle would be sitting, most likely. He would be bowing to her, but his pose here is all wrong. One foot should be in front of the other.
Thomasville Furniture had a successful line of reproductions in the early 60's.
