I think this child has something wrong with his hands, Missing a finger, or not developed quite correctly. Maybe enlarged you can take a look. He certainly was a beautiful boy.

The one on his lap looks deformed.

Rickets was common before milk delivery, and still until milk was fortified in the 1930s.

Thanks Celiene & Spirit Bear for commenting. Could be rickets is what it is--but the boy is missing a finger, which adds to the mystery. My Aunt fostered a little waif "June" in Chicago in the mid 1950s. She had bowled legs (really bad) and some upper crippling of the spine, and a beautiful face. She was very shy and quiet. I was her age and felt to sad for her.
I hope the bo ywas able to function at some level. What a beautiful face he had as well, It just tears me up to see kids suffering with deformity. We have St. Jude"s Childrens Hospital here, and they come on daily hoping for donations. I am seriously thinking of willing my house to them. I wish I could do more.
