8" WIDE BY 9.75" TALL. THIS VASE GOT A TEENY TINY CHIP AROUND THE RIM WHEN I PUT IT IN MY TRUNK AND IT LOOKS LIKE SHINEY METAL UNDER THE GLAZE. I KNOW THAT SOUNDS CRAZY, BUT DO THEY EVER PUT POTTERY GLAZE OVER METAL VASES??? IT'S LIKE A "SOFT" AND SHINEY SILVER UNDER THERE. ANY INFO WOULD BE GREAT! THANKS
No, glaze is never put over metal. The vase is made from a commercial stoneware clay, of the type used by schools and many studio potters. What you are seeing is something in the clay itself, which shows up as a darker spot. There are similar spots on the bottom.
Stoneware clays all have their own recipe or formula, and are made up of natural clay plus various additives. If it isn't blended well, if there are impurities in the things added, if the dry ingredients aren't strained carefully and a "chunk" of something gets included, or even if it's somehow contaminated with something in the process of making the pot...anything like that can result in what you are seeing here.
By the way this is signed, and the craftsmanship itself, this is most likely a student project. And schools generally don't buy the highest quality clay to begin with.
