This Bell System Telephone Ringer is in a galvanized steel box and is designed to be mounted on a wall. The steel case is perforated such that the bell can be heard. It does look much like the ringers for the antique era telephones. That does look like pair of batteries above the bell.
I cheated a bit and mounted it upside down (I think). "Bell System" which is embossed on the case is now upside down when the case is closed is now upside down. But it does display much better this way.
The home tour was supposed to be this week but I have a bit more work to do to get this place Home and Garden ready.

Cool! Looks just like the bell we had in elementary school back in the early '70s.

fortapache, I was still installing these in the early sixty and seventy. no batteries came with these loud ringing bells, they worked off ringer generator.

Looks like the batteries indicate some age. That is what I was thinking when I bought it.

I don't think a battery would do it, it takes 90 volts to ring that bell
    13. fortapache fortapache, 7 years ago
Thank you again ttomtucker. That's a fair amount of volts for a battery.
