I found this little unmarked piece at the Alameda Flea Market today. i think it's really beautiful! my hunch is that it may be Japanese, but it is unsigned and very, very thin and weighs very little. it's a little over 4 inches tall. i'm going to put it under Studio Art Pottery. ??

Japanese Banko pottery Its tapestry or marbled clay style. Its made up of colored clay. google you will find similar pieces. They general have a stamped mark on the bottom but yours could be a holder piece.

Well glad to help. You helped me also I didn't know about it being called nerikomi I just knew it as Banko by the color of the pottery. I currently do not have any of the nerikomi Banko Haven't found the right piece yet. But I am still looking. I wish my flea market was as good as yours in Alameda. I have to do Auctions or estate sales and not a lot of Oriental items show up where I live. But when they do I don't have to spend much not much competition for the items. The local antique dealers don't know what it is and don't want to purchase.

      where are you located grendel?
    11. grendel67, 7 years ago
I am in West Peoria IL I would have to go to Chicago or St. Louis which is 2-3 hr drive which doesn't lend it self to being quick thing to do. Not with kids and sports.

you are aways away! i'll be flying over illinois tomorrow night on my way to nyc. this is the nicest use of nerikome / neriage i could find on an old Japanese piece online. the design is very complex and precise on this piece. i think it may be an older one. it's unsigned, but i'm pretty certain that it is a Banko piece.
