Any one out there familiar with ole jars like this.....what was saved? it wouldnt fit in neck now ?

Pontil Mark accdg to google means maybe pre 1850 Jar
I would say that whatever was in the bottle just dried up and hardened . It looks to me as if it could have been a liniment bottle or some kind of medication that dried because the cork is gone .
Thanks Much! I too was thinking a liquid, maybe medication? one of my brothers is a microbiologist and i think he's psyched to melt it (without the use of flames) and check out the liquid form ! I am curious about the glass though.
